Private sector: an important link in tourism in Las Tunas
Cuba is attractive for tourism, so from the beginning of the Revolution, the geographical and cultural potentials were used to attract foreign visitors. This city is not one of the most prosperous in the sector but with respect to previous stages there has been a gradual increase in the influx of tourists.
In this context, non-state workers with licenses for the lease of rooms compete for service excellence. Rudi Carralero is the owner of Hostal Casa Violeta, he comments on his experience managing a business that he decided to start three years ago.
"We are in one of the main arteries of this city so we receive many foreign traffic coming from other provinces of the country. Most spend the night at night and continue their journey. There are some who frequent year after year because they feel comfortable with the service.
«That is the main portfolio of clients that visit our hostel. We have advanced in spite of the geographical fatalism of Las Tunas, because as we all know it is not one of the most visited by the foreign public ».
The number of tourists arriving in this city is not consistent with the number of hostels, a situation that puts some workers in the non-state sector at a disadvantage and, of course, demands the search for market strategies to attract attention.
«I think that advertising is the soul of commerce and what better publicity than a good service, that is our letter of introduction. If a client feels comfortable, he will surely give the reference to others. Therefore, quality is the main ally.
"We also promote the hostel on social networks, an action with results because many of those who come here, do so because in one way or another they have visited the hostel's profile on Facebook."
An experienced worker in the sector refers to the evolution of standards that facilitated the opening of rental houses at the time, but that have undermined the quality of the service in some cases.
«The patent of our business a few years ago was 200 pesos convertible monthly for each room, then it went through a process of transformation and today, we pay 35. No doubt a remarkable change.
"I remember that in 1999 when I started this work, there were only eight houses in Las Tunas that were officially dedicated to rent and today I imagine that they exceed 200. But this improvement has also allowed many people without the optimal conditions in their premises to open the business and it's really a shame ».
Some nonconformities arise in the heat of the new measures adopted to govern non-state work, but others are as long-lived as the business itself.
"I consider unnecessary the new regulation that came out in the Official Gazette which refers that we must deposit 65 percent of our profits in a fiscal account. This is pure procedure, because as soon as I enter it I have access to money. Also it is not understandable to try to spend a month trying to live with 35 percent for the end of the month put the rest in an account that is mine and that I can dispose of.
"I also do not understand why I should have two minimum installments in that same account, in my case they are more than five thousand pesos that I have mortgaged in an account that does not generate interest. The other thing we need is a place where we can buy the things we need at a better price, totally differentiated ».
The development of tourism in Las Tunas depends to a large extent on the efficient work of the non-state sector. But it is still necessary to make viable efforts such as the sale of resources at wholesale prices and have better control of the business so that the quality service is the one that thrives and not the opposite.
