Gibara: integral tourist destination
The aspiration of the Tourist Complex of Gibara, operated by the Spanish hotel chain Iberostar, is to convert the Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos into a complete tourist destination, in which different modalities converge, such as event, city, recreational and ecological tourism.
René Cobas Sierra, deputy general director of that entity, said that this marine city in eastern Cuba has a development plan until 2030, with the construction of three more hotels: La Murcielaguina, the first five stars of this destination, Bayado and the Gran Hotel of Gibara.
"At the moment the first part of the Bahia del Almirante hotel is in the phase of completion, which could become one of the best products in the area with a first line view of the Bay of Gibralá", added Cobas Sierra.
This initial phase includes six rooms of colonial style, snack restaurant, lobby and interior patio. For a second time it will annex a building in the back with 25 more rooms that, once completed, will make this hotel plant the largest capacity with 31 places for accommodation.
Along with the hotel development, other products are being worked on, such as the Malecón Recreational Center, during which the Olympic swimming pool of Gibara will be rescued.
"We propose to assume one of the emblematic buildings of this city, known as the" Cuartelón ", for its conversion into a multipurpose venue, with multipurpose rooms, bar, cafeteria, which will allow us to enter the event tourism," said the young manager. .
One of the investments to be carried out soon is the capital remodeling of the whole building traditionally known among gibareños as "La Concha", the first resort registered in Cuba, which includes the restaurant El Faro, Hostal Buena Vista and the Coral Bar.
"For this work we will use materials resistant to salinity with a design characterized by a traditional image with very modern aspects," he added.
These attributes will grant a standard four stars to the rooms of "Buena Vista", the best located in the city: facing the sea, "he said.
The Tourist Complex of Gibara also promotes a gastronomy that does not compete with local restaurants but offers an alternative more for its variety and use of patio resources.
Each of the restaurants is designed for a specific kitchen, for example the Ordoño Hotel is purely international, that of the "Arsenita" pays tribute to the Italian; while Plaza Colón honors Cuban cuisine; The Faro to the Mediterranean and the Rio de Mares to the gourmet.
Precisely, in the latter, one of the most demanded offers is the cod on spinach sponge gratinated with hollandaise sauce and rehashed garlic or lobster at low temperature biscuit style.
Gibara also promotes ecotourism with excursions to the Blue Tanks on the Caletones beach, boat trips on the Cacoyugüín River to its mouth in the bay, visit to the Cave of the Bakers and other natural attractions.
These options, in addition to tours of centers of interest, such as museums, the Tobacco Factory or the Inejiro Asanuma spinning mill, make Gibara a destination with sufficient potential to discover and exploit.
